Introduction

World Blood Donor Day will be held on 14 June 2004 as a worldwide celebration to honour and thank those people who donate their blood on a voluntary, unpaid basis to give the most precious gift of all-the Gift of Life.

World Blood Donor Day is?

World Blood Donor Day is dedicated to honor and thank voluntary non-remunerated blood donors for giving the most precious gift of all - the Gift of Life. June 14th, birthday of Karl Landsteiner, the founder of the ABO blood group system, was recognized as the World Blood Donor day by four global blood safety related organizations. World Health Organization, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the International Federation of Blood Donor Organizations (FIODS) and the International Society of Blood Transfusion, in 2004. The four organizations requested each country to create wider awareness of the importance of voluntary non- remunerated blood donation and give particular thanks to donors.

생명의 선물을 주기위해 자발적 무상헌혈에 참여하는 헌혈자에게 감사와 존경을 전하기 위해 마련된 기념일입니다.

2004년 국제 헌혈운동 관련기관(국제적십자사연맹, 세계보건기구, 국제헌혈자조직연맹, 국제수혈학회)은 혈액형을 발견한 칼 랜드스타이너의 생일인 6월 14일을 「세계 헌혈자의 날」로 제정하고, 각 국에 헌혈의 중요성을 전하고 헌혈자에게 감사를 전하도록 권고하였습니다.

In May 2005, the government's representatives of 192 countries adopted a resolution to name 14th June, each year as World Blood Donor Day at World Health Assembly. Resolution WHA58.13 urged member states of the World Health Organization (WHO) to celebrate this day in paying tribute to those people throughout the world who give their blood freely and anonymously so that the lives of any patients can be saved, or their quality of life improved.

Within just a few years, World Blood Donor Day has become an enormous success, being celebrated conspicuously in many countries worldwide. Various activities to show appreciation to regular voluntary donors and raising awareness on the importance of blood donation take place. These activities contribute to triggering public interest to emphasize the importance of voluntary non-remunerated blood donation via global campaigns.

이후 192개국 정부가 참가한 2005년 세계보건총회에서는 매년 6월 14일을 세계헌혈자의 날로 지정하는 결의안을 채택하였습니다. 결의안 WHA58.13은 세계보건기구 회원국들이 이 날을 통해 많은 환자들의 생명을 구하거나 삶의 질을 향상시키기 위해 묵묵히 자발적 헌혈에 참여하는 사람들을 기념하도록 촉구하였습니다.

세계헌혈자의 날은 재정된 지 몇 년 지나지 않았음에도 불구하고 전 세계 많은 나라에서 대규모 행사를 여는 등 큰 성공을 거두고 있습니다. 정기적이고 자발적인 헌혈자에게 고마움을 전하고 표창하는 것 외에도 헌혈의 중요성을 알리는 각종 행사들을 실시하고 있으며, 세계각국에0서 대중의 관심을 모으고 있는 이러한 행사들은 자발적 무상헌혈의 필요성에 대한 대중의 인식을 제고하기 위한 글로벌 캠페인에 기여하고 있습니다.
